Compass Score Orienteering is a team game played outdoors, in which each group works from a map and a compass to locate control points placed at recognisable features of the landscape. At each point the team punches its card and solves a riddle close by. The most distant and hardest points are worth more, so every team has to decide between a safe route with modest points and a bolder route with a higher reward and more risk. The game is played against the clock, and going beyond the time limit brings penalties, which encourages teams to plan and to keep track of each other. Because scoring rewards strategy as much as speed, the activity works for groups with very different physical profiles. Navigation is taught at the start in a short session, and the instructor is available throughout to answer questions. Route planning, map reading and division of tasks come out naturally, and the final debrief uses the decisions made on the map to discuss how the group reasons under pressure. The game is accessible throughout the year, and the area, the number of control points and the time limit are chosen according to the season and the terrain near the chosen base.

Veelgestelde vragen

Do participants need prior navigation experience?

No. A short briefing covers the compass and the map, and the instructor stays available during the game. Teams usually learn the basics in the first control points.

Is the game safe for less experienced walkers?

Yes. The area is chosen for its accessibility, and the control points can be placed closer together for less mobile groups. Teams can always choose the shorter route on the map.

Can the score be linked to a team competition?

Yes. The points can feed an overall ranking across several activities of the programme, such as a day of team games or a seminar challenge.
