Giverny, in Normandy's Eure valley, is where Claude Monet settled in 1883 and painted the water lilies, the Japanese bridge and the flower garden that still draws visitors from around the world. Painting here is a direct way to understand Impressionism: the attention to light, colour and the moment, and the decision to work outdoors rather than in the studio.
The workshop begins with a guided visit of the gardens, or of the village and its museums, depending on the season and opening times. A professional painter then leads the group in a simple outdoor session, using watercolour or acrylic, with an introduction to colour mixing and quick sketching. No prior experience is needed, and the emphasis is on looking and enjoying the process.
The workshop pairs well with a lunch in the village, a visit to Honfleur on the coast, or a return to Paris by private coach or train.
