Organising a Seminar or Incentive in the Basque Country

A seminar in the Basque Country begins with a sense of place. The coast of Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz faces the Atlantic, with cliffs, wide beaches and a light that changes within the hour. Behind it rise green hills and villages with white façades and red or green shutters, and a culture with its own language, sports and festivals. For participants who know the French Riviera or Paris, the contrast is clear, and that contrast is precisely what makes the destination effective for an incentive.

Biarritz rose to prominence in the nineteenth century under the patronage of Empress Eugénie, and it still carries that seaside-resort elegance, now combined with a surfing culture that arrived in the 1950s. The result is a town where a formal dinner and a surf lesson belong naturally to the same stay.

Biarritz Pays Basque airport serves the coast and is a short drive from the centre of Biarritz; direct services depend on the season and should be checked when the dates are fixed. The TGV from Paris-Montparnasse reaches Biarritz in roughly four and a half to five hours, and the station of Bayonne is the other main rail option. San Sebastián in Spain lies roughly an hour away by road, which makes a gastronomic day across the border possible, provided the group's documents and transport are prepared.

In Biarritz, the Hôtel du Palais, a historic seafront palace that began life as a villa built for Empress Eugénie, is the classic address for formal meetings and gala dinners. The Sofitel Biarritz Le Miramar Thalassa Sea & Spa combines a hotel with a thalassotherapy centre, and Le Biarritz and the Régina Experimental offer other styles of stay for groups of different sizes. The Biarritz congress centre, Le Bellevue, is available for larger meetings. Saint-Jean-de-Luz, about 20 minutes away, has a fishing port, a pedestrian centre and a more discreet pace. Capacities and room configurations should be confirmed with each property.

The ocean is the obvious resource, and it can be used at several levels of intensity:

• A surf lesson, which is more accessible than participants expect when it is led by qualified instructors in small groups, and which produces an immediate shared experience.
• A sailing morning with a skipper, calmer and better suited to mixed ages and abilities.
• A thalassotherapy session, which fits a seminar that needs a recovery moment between working days.
• A clifftop dinner above the sea, arranged on a private terrace or estate, which gives a farewell evening the setting it deserves.

Inland, a visit to a Basque village, a pelota demonstration and a lunch in a farm restaurant open the cultural side. We recommend limiting the number of water activities in a single programme: one active session and one restorative one are usually enough, with the remainder of the time devoted to the table and to the landscape.

The table is a strong part of the identity. Local products include Bayonne ham, Espelette pepper, sheep's cheese from the mountains, fish from the port of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and the Basque cake, and the vineyards of Irouléguy produce wines that rarely leave the region. A market visit followed by a lunch built from what has been bought is an effective way to introduce the group to these products. Dietary requirements deserve attention, since many traditional dishes are based on pork or shellfish. Announce them in the briefing so that the caterer can propose equivalent dishes without making any participant feel singled out.

The Atlantic climate is mild but changeable, and rain can arrive in any season. A seminar in the Basque Country should therefore be planned with an indoor option for each outdoor moment, decided in advance rather than on the morning itself. Late spring and early autumn are usually the most balanced periods: the sea is accessible, the beaches are less crowded and prices are more moderate than in high summer. July and August bring crowds and the highest hotel demand, and Bayonne's summer festivals fill the region. Autumn is also a good season for surf.

For groups arriving by TGV, we suggest planning luggage transfers separately from passenger transfers, as the journey ends with a change of mode between station and hotel. A stay of three days, with a day of work, a day of activities and a free half-day, gives the destination the space it requires.
