The Palais des Papes was the seat of the papacy during the fourteenth century, when the popes lived in Avignon. It is one of the largest medieval Gothic buildings in Europe, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the historic centre of the city. Its great halls, chapels and frescoes give a clear sense of the power the papacy held in that period.

An evening programme allows your group to see the palace at a different time of day, with the guided visit and, where the palace agrees, a reception or dinner in a reserved space. We check the palace's calendar, which includes its own cultural programme, and confirm the format before any commitment. The programme can be complemented by a walk across the Rhône to the Pont Saint-Bénézet or by a dinner in the old town.

Avignon is an easy base for the wider region, including the Luberon, the Camargue and the Provence vineyards.

Objectives

  • Experience one of Europe's great Gothic palaces in the evening
  • Offer a distinguished setting for a client or leadership dinner
  • Connect guests with the history of the papacy and of Provence

How it works

  1. 1We check the palace's calendar and the availability of a suitable reserved space for your date.
  2. 2Guests arrive at a dedicated entrance, with a welcome drink in the courtyard or a reserved hall.
  3. 3A guided visit of the great halls and chapels takes place, as the programme permits.
  4. 4A dinner or reception is served in the reserved space, with a menu chosen for the group.
  5. 5Guests return to their hotels by private coach or on foot through the old town.

Good to know

  • Evening events depend on the palace's cultural calendar; some halls may be unavailable on certain nights.
  • The palace is largely accessible, but some areas involve stairs and uneven stone; please share mobility needs in advance.
  • Summer evenings in Avignon are warm, and the festival season in July changes the city's atmosphere and availability.
  • Outdoor events depend on weather, and a covered alternative is planned.

Indicative budget

Indicative: from about €170 per person for a guided evening visit with reception for a group of 30 to 60, excluding dinner upgrade and transfers. Final price depends on the space and the palace's conditions. Quote on request.

Frequently asked questions

Can we dine inside the Palais des Papes?

Sometimes, in reserved spaces that the palace makes available for private events. Availability is limited and depends on conservation rules, so we propose a closely matched alternative in the old town if needed.

Is Avignon well connected for groups?

Yes. Avignon TGV station is a short transfer from the old town, and it is about two hours and forty minutes from Paris by high-speed train. Coaches can be arranged for larger groups.

What should we plan for a summer festival date?

Accommodation and venues fill quickly in July. We recommend booking at least six months ahead, and checking the festival programme so the evening does not clash with major performances.
