An ephemeral orchestra is a short, structured session in which a whole group becomes a musical ensemble. Participants receive percussion instruments or simple parts, and a conductor explains how each section fits into the whole. Within two hours, most groups play a short piece in front of their colleagues, with the satisfaction of having made it together.

No prior experience is required and instruments are supplied. The format scales well for an evening or a plenary session, and the final performance can be recorded on request, subject to the rights attached to the music performed.

Objectives

  • Build listening and timing skills within a group
  • Show how individual roles combine into a collective result
  • Offer a creative, low-pressure activity for mixed groups
  • End a plenary or an evening with a memorable shared moment

How it works

  1. 1Welcome and introduction to the conductor and the instruments
  2. 2Warm-up by sections, focusing on rhythm and listening
  3. 3Assembly of the full ensemble and rehearsal of a short arrangement
  4. 4Performance for the group, followed by a debrief on teamwork

Good to know

  • Sessions take place in a hall with suitable acoustics and space for the group; the venue is confirmed in advance
  • Instruments are supplied, and participants may bring their own if they wish
  • Recordings are subject to music rights, which the organiser handles
  • For groups above 80 people, a second conductor is recommended

Indicative budget

Indicatively from €65 to €95 per person excluding VAT, including instruments and the conductor. Hall hire, sound equipment and recording are priced separately.

Frequently asked questions

Do participants need musical training?

No. The arrangements are designed for beginners, and the conductor adapts the parts to the group's level.

Can the session be held as part of an evening programme?

Yes. It is often used as an opener for a dinner or as an entertainment element, with the performance as the climax.

How many people can take part?

Groups from about twelve to around 150 can take part, depending on the hall and the number of conductors.
